The Grim Company isn't Grim at all, so I won't be Keeping it Company!

This review is going to be a list of what I didn't like:

The book's name: not original!

That I could not relate to a single character:
I wanted to kick Cole. If he was supposed to come off as a character who behaves like an ass and yet readers would end up loving him, he didn't!

Kayne was an old veteran who kept thinking he was too old to fight and yet managed to do away with a group of soldiers. Truthfully, all his talk about having trouble when pissing turned me off right from the start. I did not warm up to him.

Jerek was an idiot who was there to... I have no idea what he was doing in the book and neither do I care.

Yllandris was a sorceress who thought all women were jealous of her because she was that beautiful. Reminded me of Melisandre from GoT. I didn't enjoy watching GoT and stopped after the first few episodes. Characters like hers are one of the many reasons I did that.Anything that I know from the later seasons is when my husband talks about the show or from the latest buzz on the internet.

The rest of them didn't even make this much of an impression.

It isn't even that I wanted to like the characters. After all, I love Jorg from Mark Lawrence's books and he isn't likeable at all. He is also full of himself but manages to make that work. Cole couldn't!

Almost 20% and I could find nothing original or something to look forward to as I read ahead. I have suffered through such books in the past (yeah, I mean Eragon) but no more.

Let us take a look at some of the things that bugged the heck outta me:
The gods were literally pulled down and thrown off their pedestals. If you want to read how amazingly this ploy can be used, read the Malazan Books of the Fallen.

There are Horse Lords and they are called Yahan. Need I explain this one?

Lackluster dialogues

P.S. I won't be rating this book because I never finished it. Needless to say that I won't be continuing with the series either.

Giveaway & Review – Roma: Underground by Gabriel Valjan @GValjan @NouveauWriter

Reblogged from: sherrysniderfundin

Roma, Underground - Gabriel Valjan

I was drawn into the Roma Series because of the fabulous covers and the storyline.

It made me think of Kathy Reichs and the the TV series, Bones, with her forensic

anthropology, only for a character that specializes in forensic accounting.

Amazon  /  Goodreads

I love the concept for Roma, Underground by Gabriel Valjan…a woman on the run and an investigator and archaelogist on a treasure hunt…of sorts.

If you like procedural novels, Roma is for you. Gabriel Valjan allows Bianca to take us step by step through her investigation, though there is more than one mystery going on.

Want to visit Roma? See some sights? Eat some great food…and lots of it? Then lets follow Bianca as she helps her ‘boyfriend’ solve the mystery of who is smuggling stolen historical artifacts out of the country.

Bianca’s step by step digital search and quick mind will have her ‘gang’ tiptoeing through danger as she tries to avoid discovery from her past employer, a covert US organization. I like that her investigation mirrored a forensic murder investigation, just surfing the internet instead of dissecting a body. She makes me think of Penelope Garcia on Criminal Minds. You must find the parts and pieces and put them together.

Gabriel Valjan is very detail oriented in his descriptions of places and food. He takes us Underground, through caves, and dining in restaurants, showcasing the food enough to make your mouth water. My only complaint is sometimes the details dogged down the pacing, slowing the story and losing the sense of suspense and danger. This could be because I am an action junkie!!!

I questioned how I would get through the entire series, but the deeper into the story I went, the more involved I became. I was already interested in Bianca, but the peripheral characters grew around her, creating their own dilemmas that drew her in, bringing with them an increasing sense of danger.

Roma, Underground’s mystery is wrapped up nicely, but Bianca’s story is still left to our imagination…or the next book, Wasp’s Nest. Thank goodness I do not have to wait, because the entire series is available.

I received Roma Underground free of charge from Gabriel Valjan.

Giveaway & Review – Strong Cold Dead by Jon Land @JonDLand @partnersincr1me

Reblogged from: sherrysniderfundin

Strong Cold Dead: A Caitlin Strong Novel (Caitlin Strong Novels) - Jon Land

Strong Cold Dead

by Jon Land

Jon Land writes a great story and Strong Cold Dead is the latest in his Caitlin Strong series. These novels will stand alone, but if you are just starting the series, I would always recommend beginning at the beginning.  Don’t want to miss anything, do you?

Politics and resentment create a hostile situation for Caitlin when she arrives on the scene of a riot, but that doesn’t stop her from taking action. And…that is only the beginning.

Jon Land’s Caitlin Strong novels are always on my reading list. I know I can’t go wrong and look forward to hours of action and adventure with Caitlin, a Strong and confident female character that defies death.

Caitlin is surrounded by characters who will grip you with their bravery and determination to get the job done, no matter the cost.

From Texas, to Canada, to Iraq, and back again, the evil doesn’t smack you in the face, but subtlely infuses itself into the story. Ghosts, Native American mysticism, terro

rists and monsters rise to a crescendo that leaves me racing to the end, wanting to know…who will live and who will die.

Seeing the terrorism is on United States soil, I felt even more fear…for all of us…because I do believe things ‘like’ this could happen at any time.

I received an ARC of Strong Cold Dead from Jon Land.

Like the Rockford Files, you’ll love Big Shoes by Jack Getze #JackGetze

Reblogged from: sherrysniderfundin

Big Shoes (Austin Carr Mysteries) (Volume 4) - Jack Getze

Series: Austin Carr Mysteries
Paperback: 198 pages
Publisher: Down & Out Books (September 7, 2015)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1943402051
ISBN-13: 978-1943402052

I have been with Jack Getze’s Austin Carr since the beginning and if you are a fan of The Rockford Files, this stand alone series is a must read. Big Shoes is the latest edition to this rollicking good fun reading and I am very excited to share it with you.

In Big Shoes, Austin Carr is back from a ‘suggested’ vacation and I can’t help but wonder what is in store for him. I know there will never be a dull moment.

Austin Carr always seems to be dodging bullets and being drawn into dangerous situations through his relationships with the quirky, off the wall characters that come into and out of his life.

His biggest downfall is the dame and when she walks into the room, his common sense goes out the window. There is always one involved and he cannot say no to her. He is quick with words and it seems like every time he opens his mouth, he’s getting himself in deeper, pissing off those who would rather punch him than talk to him.

I love the pistol packing, Mama Bones. If organized crime were a comedy, Austin Carr and Mama Bones would be the stars. She carries a ‘bag of tricks’ and ya never know what she will pull from it.

Jack Getze’s marvelous characters and writing keep me cracking up as I weave through the mysteries. His pin-up girl would be Lucille Ball, so that gives you a hint of Jack Getze’s writing style.

If you are looking for a dark comedy mystery noir, Big Shoes and the Austin Carr series fits the bill to a T! The who, what, when, where, and why aren’t as important to me as the hilarious journey to the answers. Ya never know when the bullets will start flying, so be alert and DUCK!

I received a free copy of Big Shoes from Jack Getze.

Blog Tour Stop for Wreck by Stacey Brandon & Karen Bell with Excerpt and Giveaway

Reblogged from: SnoopyDoo's Book Reviews

Today’s stop is for Stacey Brandon's & Karen Bell's Wreck. We will have info about the book and author, and a great excerpt from the book, plus a great giveaway. Make sure to check everything out and enter the giveaway. Happy Reading :)

Kyle can have almost any woman he wants… except the one he wants most. If he falls for his boss’s daughter, it could be the biggest mistake of his life. He’s made more than his fair share. It would ruin his relationship with the man he considers almost a father, and besides, she deserves someone better than him anyway.

Kinleigh knows the minute she sees the bartender in her dad’s bar that they are meant to be together. She’s heard all about his good business head, how trustworthy he is, and how much potential he has… but learning he is also the hottest man she’s ever laid eyes on had cinched the deal. She might look sweet and innocent, but looks can be deceiving. She’ll do whatever it takes to show him they belong together.

Can they learn that trusting each other is the only way to find happiness?

Or will they let prejudices destroy their lives?

Kinleigh stops the finger-tapping in order to cross her arms and glare at me. Her lips are in a tight pucker and her eyes are narrowed, but she is still adorable. I catch myself fixating on the smudge of lip gloss, fighting the urge to touch it. “Kinleigh…I…” Fuck. What the hell can I say that I didn’t already say last summer? “Are we still singing this song?” she asks. “My big, bad Daddy won’t approve? I’m too young for you? I deserve someone better than you? Blah, blah, blah… Try a new tune, Kyle. I’ve heard it all and I’m not impressed. This is my life, not my dad’s, and I get to choose the people in it. You are seven years older than me, but we’re both adults and it doesn’t matter. You have a steady job, a newly acquired college degree, and despite trying to act like you are so tough…you are one of the kindest and most generous men I’ve ever met. So quit whining and pushing me away!” Walking over to her, I stand close enough to touch. I can actually feel the warmth of her desire and anger and grit my teeth to hold back from closing that last final inch between us. Wanting her, always wanting her… but knowing it’s better this way, I pull my mouth into the familiar smirk I’ve perfected to hide what I don’t want people to see. Men read it as cocky and condescending. Women usually take it as a challenge and try even harder. But I know Kinleigh. It will piss her off. Now it’s time for the final touch. Licking my thumb, I finally wipe the lip gloss from her chin and watch her quick intake of breath. “I’m not pushing you away, babe. I’ll leave with you right now if that’s what you really want,” I whisper as I run my nose up the side of her cheek and breathe into her ear. “You will?” she whispers back. She wants to believe me. She wants to believe we are finally on the same page, but my expression is enough to create a ripple of skepticism. “Abso-fucking-lutely. We can go back to my place.” I run my hand lightly down her arm. “We can do every naughty little thing you ever dreamed about and some you’ve never even imagined.” “Oh…” I watch her pupils dilate as she swallows hard and her chest begins to rise and fall even faster. “We will have lots of fun.” She melts a little more. “But… if your dad finds out you decided to be one of my girls he will fire my ass. I happen to like my job. So you keep those pretty little lips sealed.” I place one finger over her lips to emphasize my point. “Got it, Princess?” I see when my words fully register. She jerks away from me in disgust. “One of your girls, Kyle?” she hisses. “Sure… if that’s what you want, Kinleigh,” I tell her. “I only accept willing participants.” She pulls away and turns her back to me. “Why are you doing this?” Every line of her posture betrays her pain. I want to take it all back. I want to apologize and beg forgiveness. I’m a complete asshole for trying to make her feel cheap and expendable, but I know it’s for the best. I’m going to see this through. One of us has to put an end to the ridiculous dream she has of us ever being something more to each other. “Doing what? I’m just giving you what you obviously want. We’ve messed around a few times but no more playing, Kinleigh. Let’s do this thing and get it out of our system so we can move on.” Slowly, she turns back to me. “Playing?” “I get it, okay? The spoiled princess that wants a hot night with the bad boy her parents wouldn’t approve of. Fine. I’ll be your little fantasy and enjoy the benefits of getting a piece of that fine ass.” She’s fast. I don’t see the slap coming but I sure as hell feel it. “You are an asshole, Kyle Taylor.” The low calm of her voice is worse than if she’d yelled. “Yes, I am,” I whisper to the now empty room.

Once upon a time, these two hookers became best friends…

Stacey Brandon and Karen Bell both live in the same small Texas town on the Gulf Coast, are happily married and the proud Moms of awesome kids. Stacey owns and runs a photography studio and Karen designs and sews her own children’s clothing line. They met over fifteen years ago when they decided to turn one large professional space into a single home for both businesses.

Well, that’s all the boring facts expected to be included in an “about the author” page, right? The reality is so much more fun. Stacey and Karen and their families spend holidays together, travel together… and generally turn every situation into something crazy and chaotic. They are both fluent in English, Sarcasm and Profanity and have decided the irrefutable proof of their best friend status is how often people assume they are “together” when in public. The poor husbands are good sports about it… and might even encourage this misconception at times for sheer entertainment value.

Long-Dead Gods Walk Again Has Been Done So Many Times But Promise of Blood Still Managed to Make Its Mark!

The world in this novel was divided between two kinds of magic users: Privileged & Powder Mages. While the limitations of what Powder Mages could do and could not do were clearly described, the author left the Privileged's extent of power in murky waters. That is why, whenever they pulled some new kind of crap, the reader would think it was within the magic-user's reach. Of course, we find out later that there were other sorcerers who were much more powerful. They are supposed to be extinct but at least three of them make an appearance.

The gods have abandoned the world or so the people think. So far, I have met two of them! While the most powerful of them all appears just as the book is about to end, his brother, a minor god, does get some face time in the book. Mihali can create food from nothing and heals through his cooking. Here is what I imagine he would look like:

There is no dearth of epic fantasies that focus on the military and they manage to snare me at times, (the Bridgeburners in Malazan Books of the Fallen) while failing to do so at other times (Glen Cook's Black Company). This one fell into the former category and I started to care about Olem, the Field Marshal's personal bodyguard, and Adamat, a retired police inspector. However much I wanted Olem not to die, when he survived the last fight at the end of the book, I felt as if he was one of Dumas' musketeers -- unkillable!

There are plots within plots and everyone has their own game but this complexity comes nowhere near to what Erikson can embroil his readers in.

For me, reading about the adventure that the soldiers were on was a hoot. The humor that was interwoven within that adventure was a big plus! Here are some of my favorite dialogues:
